Join SAVE and Dr Tom Bolton on a walking tour of Aldwych. Behind the wide formal streets of Aldwych and Kingsway lies a very different neighbourhood. Clare Market and Drury Lane were a tangle of disreputable alleys until the new streets cut them in half. But traces remain, and this walk dives into the back streets to track the vanished lanes and recreate their past at the core of ancient London.

Join SAVE Britain’s Heritage and Dr Tom Bolton for a walking tour of Aldwych. Behind the broad formal avenues of Aldwych and Kingsway lies a very different city: the former maze of Clare Market and Drury Lane, once dense with alleys, courts and working life, later carved apart by new streets. Traces remain, and this walk follows them to reconstruct the vanished fabric at the heart of historic London.
Along the route, we explore two SAVE cases: the Strand Piazza and 152–158 Strand, where we campaigned against demolition to protect the setting of Somerset House and the Baroque St Mary-le-Strand. The tour concludes at St Clement Danes Church where we will conclude this tour.
Dr Tom Bolton is a historian and writer, specialising in architecture, culture and place. Tom is the author of six books – Atomic Albion: Journeys Around Britains' Nuclear Power Stations, Low Country, Camden Town: Dreams of Another London, Vanished City: London's Lost Neighbourhoods, and London’s Lost Rivers: A Walker’s Guide Vols. 1 and 2.
