Basil Scruby’s 1920’s-30’s classic Arts and Crafts style garden estate which was inspired by the character of the area’s woodland and rural open spaces. This guided walk of Petts Wood focuses on the contrasting house designs such as Tudorbethan and Art Deco including Rene McIntosh influenced motifs. Stained glass also features at St Francis church; a Nickolaus Pevsner listed historical building.
Accessible parking at beginning of walk. Station Square - Ringo Parking applies. Blue Badge spaces if available on the day.
This guided walk will be led at an even pace - we cross roads with stewards. Walking for approx 45 mins. Seating, toilets at church.

Our focus is about the art and design featured in the suburban buildings which we pass on our guided walk through Petts Wood (we shall not be entering inside any houses). Our guides will point out interesting interwar motifs including doorways, windows and chimney pots! At St Francis Church we shall have an opportunity to have a rest and take some light refreshments. Also to wander around and see the fine collection of stained glass and consider the history of the church that attracted Nickolaus Pevsner to list it in one of his Historical Buildings volumes.
Depending on the weather we advise participants to wear comfortable footwear and perhaps have a brolley at the ready!
On arrival nearby toilets are avaiable on platform 3 at Petts Wood Station. No ticket required. Also cafes nearby in Queensway and Station Square.
