About

Revolution, Reform and Regeneration: Somers Town Tours

This year, for London Open House Festival, Camden Tour Guides Association will celebrate the history and heritage of Somers Town with a day of dedicated tours exploring the rich social history and architecture of this community, which is now a regeneration area, sandwiched between the major transport hubs of Euston and St Pancras stations. Hear about its historical roots as a 19th Century slum and the housing reformers, including Father Basil Jellicoe and Irene Barclay who campaigned to improve living conditions there, as well as famous radical past residents such as Mary Wollstonecraft. See historic sites in the locality such as the location of the now lost Polygon building and contemporary buildings such as Edith Neville Primary School, learning about the regeneration that has happened in Central Somers Town since 2014. Tours will be offered throughout the day, led by our knowledgeable team of Camden Guides who will be delighted to show you around the quieter residential streets of the neighbourhood and reveal its secrets, all within walking distance of bustling King’s Cross.
